@bibasu4 years agoIt was a pleasure to watch in conversation two different and yet such dignified, matured and intelligent artistes as miss ugyen choden from bhutan and i too agree to miss choden' s view that nepali cinema has come a long way and seems poised to compete with bollywood films. As a guest, she couldn' t have complimented her host better. actually that statement could be a bit of exaggeration but it anyway underlines the fact that nepali cinema has, over the years, really improved, matured and refined in its every aspect - be it story-telling, acting, direction, casting, editing, etc. Nepali cinema, with the present breed of talents, looks capable of competing with any other film industries at least in quality if not in quantity. However, the responsibility of extracting the best out of their creative artistes lie not only with the directors but also with the general viewers of the country. If viewers / consumers keep on applauding and demanding only potboilers or tear-jerkers films as " a mero hajur" or " nai nabhannu la" although the genre represented by these movies is also an integral and very popular form of art and movies anywhere in the world) and do not appreciate semi-parallel movies like kabaddi and its sequels then it would be naive to expect that nepali cinema will achieve the level where it could appear to be competing with the best. At the same time the producers, the directors and the actors have even more important role andit is a good sign for nepali film industry that many of its people have started to take film making much more seriously and responsibly. Let me try to reinforce my point with an observation from bollywood. Let us compare aamir khan and shahrukh khan (and salman khan) with every new movie, whether as an actor, director or producer, aamir khan has strived to redefine the boundaries and lift the quality of hindi cinema. On the other hand, shahrukh khan has remained more or less the same stammering guy from the day of his first hit film deewana to all other films thereafter and till date; a returning viewer of his movies can more or less predict how he is going to act (speak, behave, gesture) in the following scene in almost all of his movies. In contrast, compare aamir khan as raj in qsqt with pk of pk or sanjay singhania of ghajini! And yet shahrukh khan commands one of the biggest fan following not only nationally buttoo. In the world of arts, popularity doesn' t always mean quality. nepali film industry has certainly been enriched with the presence of a talented, sensitive, sensible and knowledgeable artiste like mr rai. His background as a theatre artiste must have greatly helped him to excel as a movie artiste. The degree of his sensitivity is evident when he says that now he feels his responsibility as an actor has increased manifold knowing that he has a huge fan-following in bhutan. What does that could possibly mean? Actually, a lot. For example, he' ll perhaps be more careful not to say and do things - including in his films - that will hurt the sentiments of bhutanese people. That is an expansion of one' s area if sensitivity. If the people of neighbouring countries like india and nepal and pakistan exercise such sensitivity towards each other' s feelings, then half of the problems would not have arisen at the first place. A talent achieves divinity if it is complemented by wisdom. Like narayan gopal, gopal yonzon, amber gurung etc. On the other hand, a talent - however gifted - looks flawed if it is infected with follies. Examples are many (including in bollywood, kaliwood) but let me cite none. nepal and nepali should feel happy and proud that an actress of a monarchical country like bhutan has learnt to speak nepali voluntarily. That is the power and beauty of nepali language and culture. At the same time, it would be a great gesture of reciprocity, sensitivity and wisdom on the part of dayahang if he could quickly learn to speak at least smattering of bhutanese and be able to address his bhutanese fans/audience in their own language - even if in a smattering manner - during his (first) visit to bhutan in coming days as disclosed by himself in the interview. Talking of power of language, perhaps miss choden must be aware that it is certainly her ability to speak nepali that must have given her the edge among other bhutanese actress for being selected for her upcoming nepali film " dui numbari" with some efforts on her part and support from her nepali counterparts, it is not unreasonable to expect her to be doing a full-fledged nepali movie in near future. After all, katrina kaif too spoke only smattering of hindi when she first came from uk to india to do bollywood films. The inference from these examples could be very interesting. Learning about others language and culture actually becomes your strength and not a weakness provided you take care to learn about your own language and culture first. wishing both the artistes success for their upcoming film. Thank you mazzako tv for the interview. It was a pleasure to watch it. edited extensively on 27-07-2020. ...Expand3
