0:00 Intro 0:42 Trams in Daugavpils 6:03 Outro Even though being inhabited by only 79.000 people, Daugavpils is the second largest city in Latvia and one of just three cities with a tram system. The first route opened in 1946, followed by some extensions until reaching a network length of 27 kilometers in 1990. Besides some second-hand Tatra compositions from Schwerin (Germany), the rolling stock consists solely of russian tram types: Ten rustic KTM-5 trams are still equipped with a classic trolley pole. The four-axle "City-Star" and KTM-23, as well as the articulated KTM-31 cars are significantly more modern. Due to the holidays, the KTM-31 and the Tatras were not in use at the time of recording.
