The imaginative names that the Rare Soul Soirees christian themselves always captures the imagination. Making you want to attend.. so SOMETHING DIFFERENT All dayer - Shirebrook - again pulled me in this year.. but I do think they have understated their “Brand” as “Something Different” is akin to suggesting “John “Reg” Christie” was maybe a very naughty boy.. Where else in England do you get served “Tapas”? well Barcelona do it sublimely, of course. The Shirebrook Boys too wanted to leave a lasting impression; delicately served cobs with troweled on “Beef Dripping”, luke warm “Pork Pie” was another exquisite morsel on offer..to be swilled down with a gulp of local Bitter.. Pringles, cockles, chorizo slices, and only the finest salted peanuts to savour. A smorgasbord of culinary delights.. As was the array of Northern Soul Music served up throughout the day, which held our churning stomachs and attacks of queasiness at bay. Whilst drop after drop delivered nothing but the most unexpected carefully chosen Soulful masterpiece… as the Big Burly men of Shirebrook, like Morris Dancers on Mayday, chaotically threw themselves onto the dancefloor. Showing unbridled appreciation for a plethora of top-drawer turntable picks.. Even when paralytic, those intrepid Rare Soul DJ’s, (now without a single record center) on either the turntable. Both lost somewhere on the stage, during the scramble for the first pickings of Shirebrook “Tapas”. Considering the now full blown effects of fine alcohol consumed, the DJ’s did a sterling job of centering the 45’s on the turntable without the guidance of “middles”…the cartridge swaying not a degree, but the room certainly was.. An electric atmosphere, selective turntable choice were carefully primed, charged and fired one after another triggering full blown “Good-Buddy-SoulBoy-comradery” as in times gone by. Here’s a tune that was aired, just one from a platter full of underplayed delights, that certainly makes “Something Different” not only live up to it’s name..but actually way exceeding the vision “Something Different..” evokes. I’ll certainly be back next Christmas.. for “Something Different..” A sobering Billy Page & Gene Page creation giving up Girl-vocal Northern Soul at it most delightful.
