Barred owls are known for their call which sounds like the phrase, "who cooks for you, you cooks for you all?" This is often how these owls are identified in the wild. Barred owls live in old growth forests and often stay perched high in dense foliage during the day, so it's not often they're actually seen. While they are less aggressive than great horned owls, barred owls rival these iconic birds in size, however, the slightly smaller barred owl will give up its territory to a threatening great horned owl. Previously, barred owls were only found on the eastern side of the United States, however they've started moving to the West coast in the past century. This puts pressure on the spotted owls who live in similar territories.
