Dr. Casey Johnson, a Pediatric Resident Physician at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares results of his study appearing in the August 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he found an association between low serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels and incidence of non-skin cancers and cancer mortality. These primarily were found in Caucasians and older women and although a causal relationship was not established, the relational nature of low vitamin D levels and cancer makes it reasonable for clinicians to continue to prescribe vitamin D supplementation in patients with levels low levels of serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D.
