But some engines are really large. Today we'll look at biggest engines in the world. It's not some forbidden technologies, it's just big engines. You won't find them in any car news, because they're placed on boats, heavy machines etc. Over 10000 hp diesel engine - just imagine this power!

    @georgecurtis64634 years ago Well, in 68 or 69 my tech school sent us on a field trip. We went to a los angeles power plant. It made methane from waste recycling and used that to power the engines. These engines were massive. 3 stories high ? Part of the cylinders could be unbolted and 3 people could stand on the piston. Rotation was not fast so you could literally follow the piston travel by sound. Was an amazing day to see this. Probably all gone by now. ... 9

    @rossk48643 years ago Missing in the convoluted explanation of rod and cylinder configuration of the Wartsila R96B is the fact that the cylinder is an enclosed bottle with the, round in cross-section, upper portion of the connecting rod passing through a sealing gland at the bottom of the cylinder bottle. When the piston travels upward, it draws combustion air into the portion of cylinder below the piston. When the piston compresses, fires and starts downward on its power stroke, it simultaneously pushes the air below the piston, up into the combustion chamber, expelling exhaust and charging the combustion chamber with combustion air for the next compression stroke. Amazingly, this 2-stroke engine has an efficiency of around 50% which makes it not only the largest reciprocating diesel engine, but also the most efficient. ... 10

    4014 was not a model number, it was a "Big Boy" serial number.
    There were SEVERAL of this model locomotive built and operated.

He was near the rail road tracks when a Big Boy came in on the wring track. It rammed another train splitting all the cars to bits and then it plowed in to the ground where hit a gas pipeline.     @hawkdsl4 years ago 4014 Big Boy is a true monster. Plenty of YouTube on it from start of restoration to main line service.... The P&W 4360 was a pretty successful engine... Again, plenty of YouTube on it if you want to see it running in both engine stands or in planes. ... 9

    @9mm20134 years ago Fact from the video: “It took time for P&W to develop the R-4360 (1942 to?) and the world moved on in the processes.” NOTE: 1942, the US was in the middle of war & GE had no reciprocating engine in the fight and the government gave the new jet to GE to develop and prevented P&W from using any time/labor to developed a jet in order to manufacture R-2800 engines that our military was using. At the time these aircraft were purchased P&W engines were used. F-15 F-16 SR-71 (world speed record) F-22 F-35 B-52 and many more. ... 1

    @remowilliams6234 years ago Something is not adding up, according to the Nuclear Industry 1 MW will supply 8000 homes, 8000 X 16 =96000 homes when it turning. I do know that a 2500 MW Nuclear Power Plant can supply power to 20 million homes non-stop for 18 months. I know because I worked at one for 25 years. Wind and solar will never be able to match that. ... 4

    @spearn0x2 years ago The big boy’s original name was the Wasatch class, also in I want to correct you, there was actually one big boy who ran on oil, that being 4005, 4005 also had a wreck like you mentioned, later on, 4005 was restored, 4014 was also converted from coal to oil after it being preserved, only 8 big boys were preserved ... 1

    @Omnihil7772 years ago In my training as an engenner our final class project was a miniature version of the Pratt & Whitney R4360 "Wasp Major" (not me alone, the whole class worked on it for almost the whole last year). The little beast actually run & made some horsepower - I sadly don't remember how much, it was 20 years ago. It ran on Ethanol with a bit of petrol in it & I remember it sounded like a bag of VERY angry hornets. As I heard it still stands in the engeneering school to this day in exposition. Was a blast to fabricate the cylinders, the tiny valves and the even tinier springs. We even had to make tools to make tools to make some parts :) True story! ... 5

    @JDs_RandomHandle2 years ago Hate to be a pain in the rear but that GE turbine is pronounced Ter-Ben, and it's a gen 4 wind turbine, not technically an engine. It uses an induction machine without a gearbox to produce electricity in some places straight to the grid, so that is a very cool fact if your an electrical guy like me.
    Plus there is only 5 that were talked about not the 10 in the title. Very disappointed but happy to learn something interesting about trains.

Like it moves its weight at ?ktonnes 1 mile taking ? gallons of fuel, that is the same as an equivalent weight of dodge diesel trucks going 1 mile using ? Gallons of fuel per truck.     @BikerBearMTB2 years ago A lot of turbofan engines are becoming larger for commercial aircraft just look at the Boeing 737 max-8. The larger engines improve efficiency as the bypass air produces a lot of thrust nowadays however these are obviously useless for jet fighters as the high bypass ratio does not allow enough compression for afterburners ... 1

    Device to end the creation of Nuclear waist.
    Electric Generator Design that's powered by it's self & perpetuates more electrical current then is needed for it to run continuously on it's own.
    Step 1: calculate how much energy you need pumped into an electric motor to make a vertically positioned circular platter with magnets in-bedded horizontally around it's left side and right side (so there pushing force is pushing out sideways relative to the vertically spinning disc) to spin as fast as you need it to. Also better to make sure these magnets are shielded around their sides & back with metal that has high permeability so the magnetic field they are emitting is focused fully out sideways. :D Step 2: Calculate how many sets of copper coils you need to be interacting with magnetic fields to achieve this & to perpetuate more electrical current flow then is needed. :D Step 3: Build a round horizontally positioned platter covered in all these copper coils pointed down that does not move (Is stationary) :D Step 4: build a round platter covered in powerful magnets pointed up that can spin and place it directly under platter with hanging copper coils. :D Step 5: Position the vertical platter that is motorized close to the horizontally positioned platter covered in magnets pointing up so that when the vertically positioned platter spins the in-bedded horizontally positioned magnetic fields slam sideways against the edge of the horizontally positioned platter causing it to spin. :) Step 6: Make sure enough of the copper coils are feeding their electrical current into the electric motor and the rest of the copper coils are linked into a set of rechargeable Battery's placed in the closest most convenient spot. Step 7: Build a duplicate setup of horizontally positioned discs with hanging copper coils and disc with upwards facing magnets and assuming the first set of discs are positioned to the front left side of vertical spinning disc, position the other duplicate structures to the front right, the back left and the back right of the vertically positioned motorized disc. As the vertically positioned motorized disc spins the horizontally in-beaded magnets will now hit into all 4 horizontally positioned discs causing them to spin. so you will effectively be using the spin of one disc powered by one electric motor to spin 4 constructs that are each generating electrical current. now build this whole setup multiple times over and use the current perpetuated by it to power up scaled electromagnetic generators that are equal to or more powerful than the ones used in a nuclear power plant. You will now have a device that is self perpetuating off of it's own electrical current perpetuation and no nuclear waist to worry about.

    @joewilson22584 years ago Those wind turbines are maintenance hungry and the blades don't last very long as the longest they last is around fifteen years . one of the biggest problem internally is the gearing system that is know to get so hot it can start a fire inside the nacelle . ...
